Program

The objective is to design a sustainable, single-family residence in North Carolina utilizing a primary timber construction system that emphasizes natural materiality. The brief requires a clear spatial division between communal living zones and private quarters, achieved by fracturing the architectural mass into two interconnected gabled volumes. Architects must synthesize regional gabled vernacular with modern wood craftsmanship, creating a cohesive identity that optimizes open-plan layouts, natural daylighting, and a fluid connection to the surrounding landscape.

Project Overview

Architecture holds a profound responsibility to ground the domestic experience within the natural world, framing environmental connection and emotional serenity. Nestled in North Carolina, this single-family timber residence manifests a deeply rooted relationship with its site through sustainable wood construction and natural materiality.

To minimize environmental impact and organize daily life, the building's mass is fractured into two distinct, interconnected gabled volumes. Linked by a transparent entry passage, this strategic volumetric split cleanly separates public and private realms. The elongated primary wing hosts an expansive, double-height living, dining, and kitchen pavilion flowing into a covered deck. Conversely, the secondary wing contains private sleeping quarters—including a master suite, bedroom, and study—offering a quiet sanctuary.

The material palette cultivates enduring warmth and tactile clarity. The rhythmic vertical timber cladding establishes a direct dialogue with the forest, while a minimalist metal roof sharpens the vernacular profile. Inside, vaulted ceilings, horizontal slot openings, and a central wood-burning stove maximize light and volume, creating an empathetic framework where space directly honors the daily human experience.

Modern Village Living

Modern Village Living

The house is shaped as two connected gabled volumes, separating the rhythm of daily life into day and night spaces. The day wing opens towards living, dining, kitchen, and the outdoor deck, while the night wing offers quieter rooms for rest, work, and retreat.

Placed between trees and surrounded by nature, the house creates the calm character of a modern village home — simple, warm, and closely connected to its landscape.

Indoor Atmospheres

Indoor Atmospheres

The interiors follow a soft minimalist language, balancing light walls and ceilings with warmer timber floors, cabinets, and window frames. This restrained palette creates a calm domestic atmosphere without feeling cold or empty.

Large openings connect the living spaces to the lawn, allowing the interior to visually merge with the landscape. The terrace extends the floor surface outward, turning the edge of the house into a gentle transition between inside, deck, and garden.

Timber Envelope

Timber Envelope

The house sits quietly within the meadow, framed by trees and open lawn. Its simple gabled form gives it the familiarity of a rural village house, while the pale timber cladding and clean metal roof create a lighter, more contemporary expression.

The façade is composed through a careful rhythm of openings: larger glazed thresholds connect the living areas to the terrace and landscape, while narrower vertical windows bring light into the quieter rooms with more privacy. Together, the materiality and openings balance openness, shelter, and a calm connection to nature.

Layout & Construction logic

Layout & Construction logic

The plan follows a clear day–night organisation. Living, dining, and kitchen form an open day wing, extending toward the covered deck and landscape.

The quieter wing contains the bedrooms, study, and master suite, giving the house a simple and legible domestic structure.

In section and elevation, the project is expressed through timber-frame construction, pitched roof trusses, vertical timber cladding, and a light metal roof — combining a familiar gabled form with an efficient contemporary building system.
