Program

As part of the Urban Re-development of the Stationspostgebouw, a former postal sorting centre next to the Hollands Spoor train station in The Hague, into a sustainable and social work environment for the 21st century while respecting the original architecture. Studio Polylester examines a non intrusive, Scultural installation on the Post NL (Dutch Postoffice) Headquaters in The Hague.

Project Overview

Urban development and rejuvenation often weaves together various disciplines and schools of thought. The reuse and architectural design of the old post office building in The Hague, the Netherlands is already in the process of being realised. Although the urbanism group and the city council have identified and called for the ‘missing element’ to be discovered!

The Post Office building is a modest yet important landmark for the city. The quest was to design an art application that is in balance with the existing building. A versatile work that amazes and continues to amaze, accentuating the location. Ultimately, the design is the basis of many artworks by Studio Ploylester in the public space: a series of sculptural movements, frozen in time and space. Using the design language and technique of Japanese origami art, Air Mail forms a sequence in which a few sheets of paper whirling upwards form a series of birds in the sky. Letters become birds. An appropriate, appealing and inspiring image day and night.

Urban Flight

The renders position Air Mail as a light sculptural gesture within the renewed public life of the former postal building. The folded forms move across the façade and toward the rounded corner, creating a sense of motion that can be read from the street, plaza, and surrounding city.

By day, the installation catches light against the concrete grid and glass façade. By night, it becomes a luminous trace — turning the building’s postal memory into a visible urban marker of movement, communication, and arrival.

From Paper to Flight

From Paper to Flight

The concept begins with a simple transformation: a sheet of paper folds into a bird. This origami logic connects directly to the memory of the post office, where paper once carried messages, movement, and communication.

The façade studies translate this idea into a suspended sequence, allowing the folded forms to appear as if they are lifting away from the building. Material and lighting tests then explore how the installation could be realised — through illuminated edges, backlighting, or neon-like outlines that make the birds visible by day and animated at night.

Luminous Urban Marker

Luminous Urban Marker

The night views develop Air Mail as a public artwork that continues to operate after daylight. The folded birds become luminous points across the façade, giving the former postal building a soft but recognisable presence within the city.

Rather than acting as signage, the installation works as an atmospheric marker — animating the public edge, guiding attention toward the renewed building, and transforming the memory of communication into light, movement, and urban identity.

Layout & Prototype Studies

Layout & Prototype Studies

The layout studies test how the installation could move across the façade, comparing different flight paths, spacing, and degrees of proximity to the building. Each version explores how the birds can remain visually light while still creating a clear urban gesture.

The prototype series develops the folded forms from small paper-like fragments into larger bird figures. As the elements increase in size and complexity, the installation gains a gradual sense of transformation — from scattered letters to a collective movement of flight.
